Excursions in Schwerin

Water is part of Schwerin's character. Lake Schwerin surrounds the castle and provides a scenic backdrop for walks, cycling and time outdoors. The Schlossgarten combines historic garden design with views towards the castle, lake and city.

For a longer route, you can follow the lakeside south from the Schlossgarten. The Franzosenweg is particularly well suited to combining walking or cycling with views across the water, while destinations around Mueß offer another way to experience Schwerin's green and lakeside surroundings.

Schwerin Castle is the city's defining landmark. Set on an island in Lake Schwerin, it combines historic architecture, a museum and extensive gardens. The castle is also part of the UNESCO World Heritage-listed Schwerin Residence Ensemble, which reflects the history of Schwerin as a former ducal residence.

From the castle, it is easy to continue into the historic centre. The Old Town, Schwerin Cathedral and Pfaffenteich can be combined into a varied walk through the city, making it possible to experience architecture, history and the waterfront without travelling far.

Many of Schwerin's main attractions can be combined without a car. The castle, gardens, Old Town and Pfaffenteich are all part of the central city experience, while public transport and cycling open up further destinations around the lakes.
