Excursions in Paderborn

Paderborn is well placed between several attractive natural areas. The Teutoburg Forest lies to the north, while the Egge Hills extend to the south-east. This gives you plenty of options for forest walks, hiking trails and viewpoints as well as quieter places for a relaxed day outdoors.

Bad Lippspringe and its green surroundings are a good choice for an easy nature trip close to Paderborn. With more time available, you can extend your radius and spend a full day hiking or exploring the landscapes of the Teutoburg Forest and Egge Hills.

The Externsteine and the Hermann Monument near Detmold are among the best-known places to visit from Paderborn. Together with the surrounding Teutoburg Forest, they offer an appealing combination of nature, history and some of East Westphalia's most recognisable landmarks.

You do not have to travel far for a shorter outing either. The Pader Springs, Paderborn's historic centre and the area around Bad Lippspringe are good choices when you only have a few hours. For the Externsteine, Detmold or longer hikes, allow at least half a day or preferably a full day.

You can reach a number of destinations across East Westphalia from Paderborn without a car. Regional trains and buses connect the city with places in the surrounding area, making car-free day trips possible without having to worry about parking or driving back afterwards.

Check the current connection before departure and, especially for nature destinations, look at the route between the nearest stop and your final destination. A smaller radius works well for spontaneous outings, while a full day gives you more options across the Teutoburg Forest and surrounding region.
