Excursions in Aschaffenburg

Aschaffenburg is home to several historic parks and gardens. Schönbusch Park is particularly well known for its extensive green spaces, lakes and small palace. The landscaped park is ideal for a longer walk and provides a peaceful contrast to the city centre.

Closer to the centre, culture and nature can easily be combined in the Palace Gardens. They extend between the Pompejanum and Johannisburg Palace above the River Main and offer attractive views of the river and surrounding landscape. For longer nature trips, increase your search radius towards the Spessart region.

Johannisburg Palace is Aschaffenburg's most distinctive landmark, with its imposing towers overlooking the River Main. Together with the Palace Gardens and Pompejanum, it creates an attractive route combining history, architecture and scenic viewpoints.

The Pompejanum was built in the 19th century as an idealised reconstruction of a Roman villa. From there, you can walk through the Palace Gardens towards Johannisburg Palace and continue into the historic city centre around Stiftsberg, where narrow streets and historic buildings reveal another side of Aschaffenburg.

Many of Aschaffenburg's central attractions can be combined on foot. Johannisburg Palace, the Palace Gardens, the Pompejanum and the historic city centre are close enough to create a varied walking route without needing a car.

For a longer day out, increase your search radius to include destinations along the Bavarian Lower Main or in the Spessart region. Check current public transport connections before departure and allow enough time for both the outward and return journey when travelling farther from the city.
